Crossrail is the largest construction project in
Europe, the total cost of the project is estimated to be in the
region of £14.8 billion. Detailed design commenced in May 2009;
Tunnel contracts were awarded in December 2010 and the project
completion is due in 2018.
The route is 120 km long
joining Maidenhead in the west with Shenfield in the east, and
Abbey Wood south of the Thames. It will deliver a fast and reliable
service resulting in a greatly reduced journey time. For example,
Maidenhead to Liverpool Street currently 85 minutes, forecast 51
minutes. Bond Street to Shenfield currently 57 minutes, forecast 47
minutes and Heathrow to Canary Wharf currently 71 minutes, forecast
43 minutes.
