The project
Workington Transport Interchange is a
complex project involving many of Capita Symonds' in-house
disciplines. The project comprises the provision of new bus bays,
shelters and a public car park for the convenient transfer between
train, private vehicles and buses. It aims to
regenerate the under-used building stock of the existing railway
station and to introduce an iconic landmark architectural structure
to help designate the area as a catalyst for urban renewal in the
area.
In the proposal, the station ticket office and main platform
entrance were moved to better cater for Disability Discrimination
Act requirements, reducing barriers. In so doing, accommodation was
made available in the old ticket office which the railway company
were at liberty to let on a profitable basis.
The area in front of the old ticket office was transformed into
a public urban ‘plaza’, and the level differences overcome via
introduction of integrated ramps and steps, terraced planting and
cascade fountain features. Taxi and passenger drop-off bays were
provided, along with a focal fountain pool.
Street furniture aimed to establish a relevant cultural
identify, based on Workington’s industrial steel production and
maritime legacy. Bespoke vehicular and pedestrian and effect
lighting were proposed. New bus shelters were designed to
accommodate passengers in comfort and provide structures for
advertising.
