The project
Commissioned by Merthyr CBC the
Woodlands Resource Centre and splash pad in Cyfarthfa Park was
developed through concept and detailed design through the Glamorgan
Joint Venture, with careful liaison with the Planning Authority,
CADW and the Design Commission for Wales.
The completed building consists of 2 education/ function rooms, a
Café and seated decking. The building is BREEAM very good rating
and has sustainability features such as:
- a sedum roof which ensures more efficient
rainwater harvesting system rather than a native grass roof, which
will also blend the building into its surroundings. The
rainwater harvesting will not only be a feature of the scheme but
will help to supply water for flushing toilets.
- additional sun pipes have been added to
the internal corridor to ensure that daylight is maximised.
- the building is heated using low
temperature under-floor heating supplied from a ground sourced heat
pump which gives a significant improvement on the requirement for
carbon dioxide emissions set in the current building
regulations.
- sections of the building have been
developed to maximise natural daylight with a brise soleil to
provide solar shading and reduce solar gain in the summer
months.
- the use of porous surface finishes and
sustainable urban drainage systems together with the sedum roof
covering will reduce the surface area of impermeable ground.
This has the effect of reducing the peak discharge of the surface
water run-off from the site.
