Capita Symonds has supported
the University College London Hospital (UCLH) for over six years.
In addition to supporting the delivery of high profiles schemes,
Inventures has written a number of business cases and feasibility
studies and has provided an Interim Development Director to The
National Hospital for Neurosurgery and Neurology
(NHNN).
The Challenge
Working with such a very large and
complex Foundation Trust which has been through a number of
organisational restructuring processes.
The Solution
Capita Symonds supports UCLH through
in-depth knowledge of the Trust and the way it operates. Samples of
projects where we have provided programme and project support
are:
MRI Project Support BrainLAB
- Capita Symonds was called into this project after phase
1; we set up the governance and structures ensuring phase 2 was
delivered in time and on budget. We project managed installation of
“BrainLAB” a highly technical surgical computer. The department was
opened by HRH Princess Royal, September 2009
33 Queen Square - we
project managed the redevelopment of a clinical neuroscience
centre for the National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery. The
design was accredited with a nomination for Best Hospital Design by
Building Better Healthcare Awards.
Reviews of Phase 1 & 2 of
the PFI Project - our senior team reviewed Phase 2 of
the PFI ensuring benefits established at FBC stage were current and
if not what changes could be incorporated prior to occupation.
Inventures quickly identified space that could be used more
efficiently and opportunities for additional revenue generation.
The plans were accepted and implemented by the Trust and Inventures
remained as Project Directors until completion of the scheme
MRC for Neuromuscular Diseases
– producing a Business Case for this key project on the
UCLH campus. On its approval, Capita Symonds was appointed to
project manage the works. Inventures delivered the project on time
and under budget.
Equipping Support -
throughout a number of schemes, Inventures has provided expertise
in specifying and procurement of the high tech group 2 and 3
equipment. In all aspects, we ensure the users are provided with
technically appropriate kit whilst the Trust receives best value
for money.
Neuro Critcal Care Unit
- Capita Symonds project managed a high profile scheme in
the heart of the hospital. It was key that down time (beds) was
minimal and that the department and supporting theatres remained
operational. We developed a revised programme that allowed all beds
to remain open and allow the works to be undertaken safely. The
project consisted of six separate phases of works, all of
which required critically ill patients being moved from the old to
the new facility.
The Benefits
Over the last six years we have
embedded best practice in terms of programme and project
management. We bring lessons learned from similar projects and
promote best practice by sharing this knowledge and understanding
not just within the Capital Investment Directorate but with
clinicians, divisional directors and other managers, and staff.
Due to the success of the projects
delivered, Capita Symonds was commissioned to write the
programme and project management procedures manual (Capital Guide)
on behalf of UCLH. We also supplied UCLH with a Strategic Programme
Director to establish the organisational and governance design for
the Trust’s Capital Programme and Capital Redevelopment at the
NHNN.
