The project
As part of the Nottingham City Council
Building School for the Future (BSF) programme, Capita Symonds
provided independent security advice to ensure the building design
processes were developed with a firm security strategy in place –
addressing both the security of the staff, pupils and visitors.
Our team was tasked with carrying out an
assessment of the architect’s plans and the contractor’s proposals
relating to all aspects of security, both technical and physical,
for all the schools in the programme. The assessment was measured
against threats and vulnerabilities identified at each site
following liaison with the local police and other interested local
authority departments.
The general findings applicable to each of the
schools were detailed in a strategy report with our findings and
recommendations. Any aspects of the design that left the schools
exposed to security risks were highlighted and bought to the
attention of the client.
The recommendations and comments made as a
consequence ensured that the proposals would be fully compliant
with existing legislation, local authority planning requirements
and best practice guidance, if applied, as well as providing the
foundation for an accurately targeted and therefore cost-effective
security solution. In particular our proposals ensured:
- the solution is specifically tailored to the operational
security management regime to be deployed
- the solution is sustainable and minimalist within the
constraints of the established building design affording
significant cost savings over the longer term.
The process also ensured that the project
minimised the potential exposure to any unexpected security related
legal complications or expense at a later date.
