The facts
Client: Ministry of
Defence
Location: Plymouth
Services: Structural engineering
Sector: Maritime
Project Value: £1.5m (ongoing)
Start/Completion: 2008 - ongoing
The project
Capita Symonds provided marine structural engineering
services on the development of a new layout for the
marine-based infrastructure for the Royal Navy’s primary
training centre.
The new scheme was required to improve the operational
efficiency of centre and reduce ongoing maintenance costs. The
new layout prevents part of the facility drying out at low water
improving flexibility of use and avoids damage to the local marine
habitat.
We provided structural design and detailing services for
pontoons, piling, a fixed bridge, a linkspan bridge and ship
locating piles and restraint brackets together with M&E design
for ship and boat services. Preparation of drawings and
contract documents for the approved layout was also undertaken.
The site is situated within a Special Area of Conservation (SAC)
and is adjacent to a Site of Special Scientific Interest
(SSSI). Consultation with all interested stakeholders was
undertaken and all Statutory Approvals were submitted and obtained
on behalf of the Ministry of Defence including Planning, Marine,
Environment Agency and Natural England consents.
