The project

Capita Symonds was commissioned by Cumbria County Council to resolve the routing of part of the Hadrian’s Cycleway  (Route 72) through Flimby, West Cumbria.

Once a suitable route was negotiated Capita Symonds undertook the design and managed the implementation of the new section of cycleway. The project involved the detailed investigation of a number of route options, extensive landowner negotiation involving local farmers and multi national companies.

Implementation of the project included the monitoring of ecological impacts, negotiations with utility companies and the Environment Agency.

On completion, local schoolchildren were involved in planting native trees and shrubs to enhance the scheme. The project has not only successfully plugged an import gap in an increasingly busy long distance route but has also provided a valuable commuter route and an important local circular walk for Flimby residents.
