The project
Capita Symonds is currently providing a range of
services to Cumbria County Council to support the development of
four new Academies through the Partnership for Schools National
Framework.
The projects are part of the Council’s vision to transform the
local education agenda and to build a brighter future for local
communities.
Following a strategic review of primary and secondary education
provision, Capita Symonds supported the Council’s strategy for
change through the delivery of all Technical Advisor services as
defined within the Partnership for Schools Scope of Services. In
addition, Capita Symonds harnessed wider skills and experience from
its broad multidisciplinary offering to provide specialist
planning, project management, estates, transportation, acoustics,
geo-technical, environmental and ecology services, ensuring an
integrated approach at every stage. Capita Symonds also provides
Clerk of Works services to monitor the progress and quality of the
works to ensure reliable, compliant and satisfactory outcomes.
Capita Symonds has also engaged with the contract consortia,
local authority and sponsors, promoting clear communication and
shared objectives across the four schemes:
West Lakes
Academy, Egremont
Featuring a community library and youth centre, the new £26m West
Lakes Academy specialises in Science and the Arts (Visual &
Performance). Sponsored by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority,
Sellafield Ltd, and the University of Central Lancashire, the
Academy caters for 1150 11-18 year olds. Work is currently underway
on the Academy’s new building which will open in April 2012.
Richard Rose Central,
Carlisle
This £31million state of the art learning
facility will specialise in Sports, Science and Business Enterprise
and is adjacent to an exciting new ‘Youth Zone’ which will provide
varied and engaging activities for young people throughout the
year. The new Academy building will cater for 1500 11-18 year olds
when it opens in January 2011.
Richard Rose Morton, Carlisle
Part
of secondary school re-organisation and a wish to transform
education for Carlisle, the Morton project will feature the latest
in sustainable design including rainwater harvesting and its own
biomass energy centre to provide heating. Specialising in
mathematics and the arts, the new Academy building will cater for
1150 11-18 year olds and will open in September 2011.
Furness Academy, Barrow
Formed from three secondary schools – Thorncliffe, Parkview and
Alfred Barrow - Furness Academy originally opened in September
2009. Sponsored by Furness College, the University of Cumbria and
Barrow Sixth Form College, the new build Academy will specialise in
sports and applied mathematics for pupils aged 11-16 and is due to
open late 2012.
