The Project
Funded by the Welsh Assembly

Church Village Bypass now forms a major section of the A473
strategic link between Pontypridd and Bridgend.
The Bypass was developed through preliminary
design and Public Exhibition, followed by Planning, Compulsory
Purchase, and following the appointment of a Principal Contractor
developed the Value Engineering initiatives as part of the
integrated team
The route passes through a number of landfill
sites, mineworkings, PFA, peat, coal and up to half a million tyres
which were reused within the works.
The bypass also passes through a number of
local sites of nature conservation where it impacts on great
crested newt, dormouse, badger, otter, bat and marsh fritillary
butterfly habitats, Mitigation measures include newt ponds,
dormouse bridges, badger and otter tunnels, sympathetic lighting
design and habitat planting. In the Llantwit Fardre Marsh area,
land was acquired as a replacement marsh fritillary butterfly
habitat, and a rock drainage blanket minimises the hydrological
impact.
Capita Symonds also provided the NEC3 Project Manager, Client
Agent and CDMC roles during the construction works.
The scheme was completed in 2010 ahead of
schedule and under budget
