Blackburn’s £8
million market has been named the UK’s Best Indoor Market by the
National Association of British Market Authorities.
Capita Symonds’ Blackburn office provided
architecture, project
management, mechanical & electrical
engineering, CDM, cost consultancy, structural
engineering, and property consultancy services on the
project which opened in June last year.
Part of a £66m extension to the ground floor of the busy Mall
shopping centre, the 68,000 sq ft
continental-style market comprises a range of different stalls from
arts & crafts to wedding dresses.
Blackburn with Darwen Council, in partnership
with the Mall Fund, has invested heavily in the market as part of
its commitment to the regeneration of the town centre and over 80
per cent of the stalls have been allocated, both to existing and
new traders.
Councillor Dave Harling, Executive Member for Regeneration,
said: “We are delighted with the news and feel the award is
justified as we are very proud of our fabulous new market. A big
thank you to everyone involved including the market traders, our
partner the Mall and our customers who have given us tremendous
feedback. It is nice that our market, which is drawing thousands of
visitors every week, has been recognised nationally.”
