Sustainability at Capita
Symonds
The word Sustainability is often used as a catch all for many
diverse ideas and requirements. It can be seen as “a good thing” or
“something we have to do” without a full appreciation,
understanding or formulation of a concept to inform our actions.
This can apply to construction projects when there is a desire to
achieve BREEAM “excellent” or some other standard without
understanding the implications and alternatives.
Sustainability is often read as reducing energy usage, or
reducing reliance on carbon fuels. This is a one dimensional
reading, and is perhaps used because it is the easiest facet to
measure. Sustainability should take into account the entire
project; the impact in terms of a carbon value, a social value, and
an economic value.
We are committed to providing professional services that are
holistically sustainable. We use the widely held definition that a
sustainable proposal is one that “… meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future generations to meet
their own needs”.
Our sustainability policy encompasses our focus on conserving
energy, reducing construction and operational waste and maximising
the use of renewable or reusable resources. Our policy is backed up
by a strategy to achieve these aims with toolkits to assist our
design teams, clients and consultants in understanding the design
processes and ensuring that on all projects there is an appropriate
environmental brief.
