Clifford Martin: Head of Architecture

Clifford heads our 14 studio, 300 person Architecture, Planning, Environment and Design practice. 

He is responsible for shaping the direction of the practice as Capita Symonds seeks to become one of the UK’s leading design firms, and has a wealth of experience leading design teams. His buildings have won national and international awards (including RIBA, BCO and MIPIM awards together with the Europa Nostra silver medal) as well as being noted for their through-life sustainability.

Andrew Pryke: Head of Commercial

Andrew has over 22 years of high profile and award winning design experience within the commercial sector.

Delivering projects for clients in the UK and internationally. Before joining Capita Symonds Andrew was a Director at John McAslan and partners and a Senior Associate at James Stirling, Michael Wilford and Associates. Key projects, led by Andrew, include:

  • Ashford Commercial Quarter
  • No. 1 Poultry, London
  • Peter Jones Store, London
  • 60 storey tower, Kampala, Uganda
  • New waterside development, Southampton
  • A 400 room hotel and conference suite, Southampton
  • 200 residential unit and masterplan, Glasgow
  • Bedford Children’s Centre

Gavin Urquhart: Head of Transport

Gavin has recently joined Capita Symonds' architecture team to head up the transport sector.

He has extensive experience leading projects from inception to delivery on site. These include a number of complex projects, involving major interfaces with the public, providing a developed understanding of the processes through working within integrated project teams, with suppliers and clients to achieve optimum coordinated solutions. With over 18 years experience across various sectors, Gavin has accumulated a good breadth of knowledge. The majority of projects Gavin has been involved with are in the Transportation sector (Aviation and Rail), which has enabled him to develop a good understanding of common client requirements and passenger movement issues.

Iain Martin: Head of Science & Technology

Iain is sector head for Science & Technology which includes further and higher education.

He has a wide variety of architectural experience and is responsible for the groundbreaking, award winning projects in sector.  Iain’s prime skills enable Capita Symonds to bridge the gap between the Health and Education sectors. Iain also speaks fluent German, and is a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Coastal Skipper. The key projects Iain has led include:

  • Nanoscience research complex, Bristol University
  • Diamond Light Source, Beamline facilities at research complex, Oxfordshire

Jonathan Adams: Head of Cultural

Jonathan is Head for cultural sector and oversees all creative arts, exhibitions and conference facility projects in Capita Symonds.  His 22 years of high level, award winning experience started at William Alsop before moving to Percy Thomas and Capita Symonds.

Responsible for the high profile Wales Millennium Centre, Jonathan is currently designing the office extension for the award winning Hoddinott Hall Theatre. Jonathan is a Design Review member of the Design Commission for Wales. He is a Council member of the Royal Society of Architects in Wales and a Council Member of Cywaith Cymru / Artworks Wales. He is also Vice-Chairman of the Welsh Stone Forum. Key projects Jonathan has led include:

  • Wales Millennium Centre
  • Hoddinott Hall
  • The Sherman Cymru Theatre

Paul Healy-Jones: Head of Education

Paul is the sector head for education within Capita Symonds’ architecture practice.

He previously led the sector lead at Percy Thomas Architects prior to their acquisition by Capita Symonds in 2004. Paul is an architect whose background and experience demonstrates a diversity of approach: from local authority to private practice, and within a local and international context. Paul has been responsible for the design and realisation of a wide range of building types including, Schools, Colleges, Arts Centres, Offices, Industrial Facilities and Social Housing. With over two decades of architectural practice he has experience of a variety of project procurement methods including, traditional, design and build, partnering, construction management and prime contracting. Paul’s main area of expertise has been the design and realisation of schools. He has lead award-winning projects delivered through government initiatives such as Academies, Building Schools for the Future, the Primary Capital Programme and Free Schools. He has also participated in judging for the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) awards, along with presenting and reviewing many education projects.

As an architect, Paul pursues an inclusive and collaborative approach to promote a "natural" architecture. It is an evolutionary and humanistic vision of architecture that participates in all aspects of local context and culture. Key projects he has led include:

  • The Academy of St Francis of Assissi,
  • Oasis Academies at Enfield, Bristol, Wintringham and Immingham and
  • Nottinghamshire City Build Schools for Future (BSF).

Paul Innes: Head of Defence

Paul oversees all defence and security sector activity across the architecture practice, and is responsible for bringing together the very specific design expertise that is required to service this sector.

Paul is also part of the Capita Symonds Defence Strategy Group, which determines our approach to the sector and our response to major sector opportunities as they arise. As a Chartered Architect, Paul has 25 years experience of working throughout the UK and in the EU, and of bidding for work in the Far East. He has a long term professional interest in collaborative working, and also in the social and economic impact of the built environment.

Paul’s previous roles as an Associate at RMJM and Archial have helped to form his current broad range of skills including specification and design; strategic planning and procurement; commercial and project management; organisational development and team management and senior level experience in environmental, education, defence, industrial and commercial projects. Paul ‘s business management experience includes methodologies such as Six Sigma and PRINCE2/MSP. Paul is a Director for our Glasgow, Edinburgh and Cambridge studios. His key projects include:

  • Northwood MoD Headquarters. Part of consortium bidding for a £350m PPP contract for the rationalisation and improvement of this key command centre.
  •  RAF Lakenheath Housing Study. Masterplan, landscape and services infrastructure design for 600 new family houses for USAFE personnel.
  • Masterplan for Site Redevelopment, Insys Limited, Bedford (Now Lockheed Martin). Rationalisation of specialist defence manufacturing site and partial reallocation for housing.
  • USAFE Ramstein Base Development Plan, Germany. Computer-generated 3D model, scripted ‘movie’ and interactive walkthrough to support the development plan for the base.

Peter Mellor: Head of Justice

Peter has over 35 years continuous experience of designing and the managing of architectural projects for the public and private sectors, with extensive knowledge of the remand sector.

Having worked with the Home Office Construction Unit, Wates Construction, Skanska, NOMS, MoJ and the YJB through this period, Peter has been able to keep abreast of the major events and consequent changes that have affected the design operation and delivery of all categories of establishment. Key projects Peter has led include:

  • Belmarsh Prison (2008 - Present),
  • Maghull Prison (2008 - 2010),
  • HMP Dovegate Expansion (2007 - 2010) and
  • HMP Lowdham Grange, Expansion I & II (2005 - 2010)

Ron Morgan: Head of Healthcare

Ron is sector head of healthcare and has over 30 years of experience in leading project teams in the design of healthcare facilities. He has a keen interest in the functionality and utility of buildings and in recent years has concentrated on designing hospitals and medical facilities where the emphasis is placed on safe, therapeutic, healing environments.

Ron has in-depth experience of both the UK and American approach to healthcare. This allows him to bring an innovative approach to healthcare design. He introduced the concept of Modular and Evidenced Based Design (EBD) principles within Capita Symonds as a way of helping to improve patient safety and design quality in UK healthcare environments. Key projects Ron has led include:

  • Strategic Development and Master Planning projects at Torbay and Huddersfield,
  • The St Helens and Whiston PFI,
  • Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast - New Emergency & Intensive Care Facility
  • Downe Community Hospital in Downpatrick N.I.
