Hear first-hand how BusinessWise can make a difference -
to those on the course, their managers and our
business:
Tim Potter
Architectural Technologist, Blackburn
“I was put forward for
BusinessWise by the head of architecture and after he gave me some
background, I felt that it would be an excellent opportunity for me
to learn more practical business skills and further my career.
I have found the content excellent and I have related everything
I have learned back to my day job. There were business things I
have always wanted to know but never been able to look into before,
like finances and management. Now I feel comfortable talking about
them.
Since starting BusinessWise I can see the bigger picture and think about the impact my activities have on the whole business.
The lectures have been interesting and tie in well with Capita
Symonds activities but my favourite part was the Lledr Hall
excursion. The team activities have helped to consider
relationships at work and how we interact with people and I have
been able to take a lot of that back to the office and my own
team. It was also a great opportunity to meet with other
graduates and share our experiences.
Since starting BusinessWise, I now look at Capita Symonds as a
whole company, I don’t just focus on my own team. I can see the
bigger picture and think about the impact my activities have on the
whole business.
I think that BusinessWise has helped me in many ways and has
also been enjoyable at the same time.”

Director, Blackburn
Many organisations recognise the importance of investing in
their staff and Capita Symonds is no exception having adopted
various coaching and training programmes over recent
years.
I can already see the benefits that the programme has brought to the business
One example of the success of this strategy is Tim Potter who
was selected to go on the BusinessWise programme after
demonstrating his appetite for understanding more about the
business and how it is managed. To broaden his skills and natural
ability the programme seemed a natural choice to provide academic
and practical training beyond that of his technical training
allowing him to prepare for career progression into areas were into
business and commercial awareness is key.
Tim has just completed the first year of the programme but I can
already see the benefits that the programme has brought to the
business. He is engaged in the business – thinking about how
activities impact on the team and the wider business and being more
commercial in his approach.
BusinessWise allows graduates to interact with others from
around the business and has increased the networking across
disciplines and sites, which is crucial to the growth and
development of Capita Symonds. Tim is now communicating with
graduates in other teams and offices that he had never met prior to
starting BusinessWise.
The programme also gives graduates access to some of Capita
Symonds key specialists, which is an opportunity they did not have
before and allows us as a company to share knowledge and learn from
the best.
The content of BusinessWise supports Tim’s aspirations to become
chartered with the Chartered Institute of Architectural
Technologists (CIAT), covering the key business competencies that
full membership of this professional body requires.
We are very pleased with Tim’s development since starting the
BusinessWise programme and look forward to seeing him progress
further in Year 2 not to mention his career develop with the
company. I would have no hesitation in supporting any new graduates
that join Capita Symonds who demonstrate similar potential to
enroll on the BusinessWise programme.
